Golden Horseshoes Festival

The Golden Horseshoes Festival is Beechworth’s most enduring event. It celebrates the legend of Daniel Cameron who in 1855 memorably led a parade through the streets of Beechworth on a horse shoed with shoes of real gold. Cameron, a political candidate to the Victorian Legislative Assembly, proved a hit with the locals who fittingly elected him to the State’s first parliament in front of the Star Theatre.
Each Easter Saturday, the 158 year old legend is re-enacted with the tradition of shoeing a horse with golden shoes, and a Grand Parade led by a rider in the form of Daniel Cameron. This must see event is annually witnessed by thousands of visitors enjoying the history, music and fun of the Golden Horseshoes Festival.
Beechworth’s huge annual Easter celebration will be bigger than ever in 2013. This year’s event is proudly co-sponsored by Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey and will embody the theme of ‘Gold, History, Family& Fun’.
The 2013 program will include the festival favorites including the Grand parade on Easter Saturday and the Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday. Saturday evening will see the inaugural twilight market at the Beechworth Goal with food stalls and entertainment into the night. An experience not to be missed.
The Beechworth Golden Horseshoes Festival is traditionally the biggest annual festival on the Beechworth calendar with plenty of activities that everyone is sure to love.
